Far too often we are so worried about destination that we lose site of what we need to do today, which is "row the oars of life." I also view minfulness as a sail to ease the fatigue of rowing. The poem touches nicely on desire, impermenance, and cyclical living in a straight-forward way. The one peice I would say often not touched on in minfulness is that an awakening to this world, can also be an awakening to the ills that exist in it. Minfulness of course does not lead to a care free life of bliss, it also opens us up to those around us that are struggling and may be able to benefit from our own new insight to this amazing world. I use mindful eating as a great technique for my clients who both restrict and binge. I pick one meal a day to eat mindfully.
Another great intervention is to have a ED client research a certain food and all the benifits that food provides to the body. Then, while eating, repeat the benifits like affirmations. I was thinking how sometimes at group meditation programs we get into this kind of trippy mindset or thinking that we all have to have something "positive" or "enlightening" to say. You know, these discussion groups that are so irritating sometimes! Everyone, including myself want to have some profound or insightful very positive comment. That's nice but sometimes it gets to the point where we are all sitting around smiling and patting each other on the back for being so "Nice". I have felt that I need room to be sad or unhappy and maybe even angry! I think we can afford to let any emotion be recognized even if it doesn't fit into our idea of what an "enlightened" person is like. Every emotion even the negative ones have their energy and texture and wisdom.
That's just a couple of cents from a rebel student!
xo
KKatherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05040131776023628657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4181823887709858824.post-32769757997783225512011-01-04T19:48:44.810-04:002011-01-04T19:48:44.810-04:00Thanks Mike for the potent reminder not to take ou...Thanks Mike for the potent reminder not to take ourselves too seriously and to hold our commitment to mindfulness lightly. It reminds me of the well known image of the gently cupped hand that can hold more water than the tightly held fist. The lighter we hold things, the more we can hold. The tighter we hold them, the more pressure we may feel to get it right all the time and the harder we are on ourselves when the keys drop, as they inevitably will from time to time!Eileenhttp://www.fireinside.canoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4181823887709858824.post-88132116876172491152010-12-17T18:15:45.751-04:002010-12-17T18:15:45.751-04:00Hi Guys!
